Overland routes of the pioneer West: Cartograph no. 2, created in 1951 by Al O. Dinsdale and lithographed for Wells Fargo Bank,...

Overland routes of the pioneer West: Cartograph no. 2, created in 1951 by Al O. Dinsdale and lithographed for Wells Fargo Bank, San Francisco, is a spirited chronicle of movement across the American continent. Dinsdale gathers the great arteries of expansion—stage lines, emigrant trails, and the first transcontinental rails—into a single, vivid narrative. A carefully keyed legend distinguishes each historic route, while a classic compass rose orients the viewer across mountains, deserts, and river valleys. Trains, stagecoaches, Pony Express riders, and sailboats animate the page, marrying romance to reportage. The result is both a map and a memory palace: a sweeping visualization of how the West was connected—end to end—by grit, capital, and sheer geographic ingenuity.

Dinsdale gives special prominence to the Southern Overland Stage, the celebrated Butterfield corridor that moved mail and passengers from the Mississippi Valley by way of Tipton and the arid Southwest to California. The route’s passage through El Paso and on along the Gila is set against shaded relief that dramatizes the mesas and basin-and-range country, before angling toward the coastal gateways of Los Angeles and San Diego and, ultimately, San Francisco. In counterpoint, the Central Overland Stage climbs the Platte country to the spine of the Rockies, threading Fort Bridger and the Wasatch before descending the Sierra’s western slopes into Sacramento—an itinerary the relief shading renders with tactile clarity.

The Pony Express streaks across the page like a fuse, a lean, urgent line linking Missouri to the Pacific in just months of feverish operation. Dinsdale’s riders gallop past waypoints such as Fort Bridger, racing the weather across sagebrush flats and over high passes toward Sacramento. Parallel to that dash, the Oregon–California Trail unfurls along the Platte and Sweetwater to South Pass, then down the Humboldt toward the gold fields, while the Santa Fe Trail departs Independence for the high plains and the old Spanish corridor. Denver and Salt Lake City appear as rising interior capitals, their positions explained by rivers and passes that made them inevitable crossroads.

If the trails narrate the nation’s youth, the railroads depict its coming of age. The Union Pacific thrusts west from Omaha; the Central Pacific climbs east from Sacramento—iron paths that converge across Utah, binding ocean to ocean. Dinsdale’s locomotives arc past the Wasatch and Sierra Nevada, their momentum echoed by sailboats plying the Pacific approaches and the great river systems. Eastern anchors—St. Louis, Chicago, New York, Boston, and the Gulf entrepôt of New Orleans—signal the broader commercial orbit that the transcontinental system unlocked. A lucid legend decodes lines and symbols, while the compass rose gives the composition a mariner’s poise amid continental distances.

Al O. Dinsdale, a mid-century artist-cartographer with a gift for narrative clarity, distilled complex networks into scenes of movement and meaning. Commissioned by Wells Fargo Bank in San Francisco, he shaped corporate heritage and national memory into a single cartographic tableau, its vibrant colors and pictorial vignettes humanizing the vastness of the American interior. Relief shading models the Rockies, Wasatch, and Sierra with sculptural sensitivity; rivers like the Missouri, Platte, and Rio Grande become both guides and obstacles. Cities from Independence and Tipton to Salt Lake City, Denver, Sacramento, San Francisco, and Los Angeles are positioned not merely as points, but as consequences of terrain and route. It is a map that invites the eye to travel—and the mind to remember.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

We work with interior designers, hospitality businesses, property professionals, offices and corporate buyers on individual pieces and larger coordinated projects.

We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
