Published in 1966 from 1964 survey work, the United States Geological Survey’s “Waynesboro West” captures a richly varied portion of Virginia at the exacting 1:24,000 scale. Centered on Waynesboro and its western surroundings, the map belongs to the classic mid-century USGS quadrangle tradition: precise, restrained, and deeply informative. Its contours, roads, railroads, waterways, woodland shading, and settlement patterns together form a layered portrait of a city poised between valley industry and mountain landscape. At this scale, the map offers both civic detail and regional context, showing how streets, transportation corridors, streams, and rising ground interlock in a part of Virginia shaped by movement through the Shenandoah Valley and by the dramatic relief of the Blue Ridge and adjoining highlands.

Waynesboro itself appears as the principal populated place, its urban fabric rendered through the crisp red geometry typical of USGS mapping of the era. Residential districts, roads, and developed areas are set against the cooler greens and browns of the surrounding countryside, making the town’s mid-1960s footprint legible at a glance. The South River, one of the defining natural features of Waynesboro, threads through the landscape, connecting the city to the broader hydrology of the Shenandoah Valley. Rail lines and roads emphasize Waynesboro’s role as a transportation node, historically important as a passage between mountain routes, valley agriculture, and expanding modern infrastructure. The map thus preserves a moment when postwar growth, older settlement patterns, and Appalachian topography coexisted in fine cartographic balance.

The topographic character of the map is especially compelling. Fine contour lines articulate the ridges, hills, hollows, and slopes surrounding Waynesboro, revealing a landscape far more intricate than a road map could suggest. Elevation is not merely indicated but sculpted across the sheet, allowing the eye to follow gradients from valley floor to wooded high ground. Streams and creeks are drawn with equal care, their courses responding to the terrain and helping explain the placement of roads, settlements, and open land. The green forested areas, including land associated with the George Washington National Forest, add ecological depth to the composition. This is cartography as terrain-reading: a disciplined visual language that translates the physical structure of Virginia’s mountain-valley country into an elegant, usable form.

As a USGS production, “Waynesboro West” reflects the federal survey’s long commitment to mapping the nation with scientific consistency and practical clarity. By the mid-twentieth century, USGS quadrangles had become indispensable tools for engineers, planners, hikers, foresters, geologists, and local governments. Their distinctive design—subtle color, standardized symbols, measured typography, and meticulously surveyed contouring—created maps that were at once utilitarian and quietly beautiful. This example shows that tradition at its best, using a simple palette to distinguish roads, water, vegetation, built areas, and relief without visual clutter. The result is a document of landscape intelligence, offering reliable information while retaining the aesthetic appeal of a carefully composed scientific artifact.

Historically, the map offers a valuable record of Waynesboro and its surroundings during a period of significant regional change. The 1960s brought expanding road networks, suburban development, and evolving land use across many Shenandoah Valley communities, while the mountains and forested lands to the west retained a strong sense of permanence. In this tension between development and terrain lies much of the map’s fascination. It shows not only where things were, but how the shape of the land guided what could be built, traveled, farmed, or preserved. For collectors drawn to Virginia history, Appalachian geography, or the refined precision of American topographic mapping, this quadrangle offers a vivid mid-century portrait of a distinctive place.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
