Pictorial map of Michigan is John G. Brink’s vivacious mid-century portrait of the Wolverine State, published by Rand McNally & Co. in Chicago in 1950. In a single sweep it fuses cartographic precision with narrative illustration, inviting viewers to read the land as both geography and story. Brink’s hand animates the peninsulas with lively vignettes, while a handsome compass rose fixes north at the top, clarifying orientation without disturbing the exuberant design. An ornate cartouche—sumptuous with flourishes emblematic of the era’s taste—frames the title and signals the map’s dual role as art and information. At once playful and authoritative, this work distills a moment of American confidence, when Michigan’s roads, cities, and industries were accelerating into the postwar future yet remained anchored in deep natural beauty and regional tradition.

The state unfolds from shore to shore, its contours trimmed by the cold brilliance of the Great Lakes—most notably Lake Superior and Lake Michigan—whose scalloped coastlines host a constellation of lighthouses. Braided rivers snake inland through forests and farmland, while dunes, islands, and promontories are picked out with painterly care. Brink scatters wildlife among the waters and woods, enlivening the scene with loons, deer, and leaping fish that echo the map’s celebration of outdoor life. Historic landmarks punctuate the terrain, their miniature facades cueing memory and place as roads stitch together distant counties. The result is a layered landscape where topography, ecology, and human endeavor are all legible at a glance.

Political order is crisply asserted: county lines are cleanly etched and state borders briskly defined, giving structure to the exuberant imagery. Brink highlights the arterial road network that, in the pre-Interstate era, connected Michigan’s major cities with purposeful clarity. Ribbons of highway swoop toward Detroit, Grand Rapids, Flint, Kalamazoo, and Ann Arbor, while secondary routes lace through smaller towns and agricultural districts. The visual hierarchy of routes and settlements makes travel logic immediate, guiding the eye along corridors of commerce and leisure. Along these pathways, prominent structures—monuments, courthouses, venerable churches, and the occasional collegiate spire—rise as waypoints of memory. This is a map meant to be read in motion, its tempo set by the rhythm of mid-century roads and the confidence of American mobility.

Cultural memory is everywhere inscribed. Pictorial emblems nod to the state’s defining enterprises and traditions: bustling auto plants around Detroit, furniture craftsmanship in Grand Rapids, the iron and copper heritage of the north, orchards and farms stitched across the lower counties, and fishing fleets that ply the inland seas. Scenes of local crafts and seasonal activities—boating, hunting, winter sport—suggest a populace as attuned to nature as to industry. Historic forts, mission sites, and commemorative monuments surface as narrative anchors, while county seats and mill towns speak to the quieter labors that formed modern Michigan. Brink’s illustrations compress centuries of endeavor into a clear, engaging tableau, showing how resources, skill, and landscape conspired to shape a state at the height of postwar transformation.

Five inset views—Detroit, Grand Rapids, Flint, Kalamazoo, and Ann Arbor—bring metropolitan life into intimate focus, their denser tracery of streets and landmarks revealing the texture behind the statewide network. These windows reward lingering: academic greens and factories, civic buildings and cultural halls, riverfronts and parks, all presented with the same verve as the broader map. The insets balance the grand sweep with urban detail, while the sumptuous cartouche returns the eye to the whole, uniting parts and periphery in a single, stylish statement. As a collaboration between Brink and Rand McNally at mid-century, the map preserves Michigan’s landscape and heritage at a moment of change—vivid, informative, and brimming with the optimism of 1950.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
