Rather than describing the street in precise architectural detail, Macke concentrates on the human flow within it. A seated, darkly outlined figure anchors the central foreground, while the forms around this still presence seem to pass, gather and dissolve into the warm brown atmosphere.
Macke was a leading member of Der Blaue Reiter, the Munich-based association that became one of the principal forces in German Expressionism. His interpretation of modernity was notably convivial: promenades, shop windows, gardens and fashionably dressed pedestrians provided him with subjects through which colour and simplified form could register the tempo of contemporary life. Created during the intensely productive final phase of his short career, Auf der Promenade belongs to this sustained examination of public space—not as documentary reportage, but as an arrangement of movement, light and sociability.
A closer look
The composition is asymmetrical and densely worked through the middle, where figures occupy the promenade at different apparent distances. Their individuality is conveyed economically. Variations in the tilt and shape of hats distinguish one person from another, while fluid black contours give bodies direction without fixing them into rigid outlines. The resulting balance is curious and effective: the scene feels busy, yet its pedestrians remain poised and self-contained.
Compared with the brilliant colour for which Macke is often known, the palette here is unusually restrained. Earthy umbers and warm beige tones are set against near-black lines, with lighter passages breaking through like reflected daylight. A pale area near the centre opens a pocket of depth among the darker forms, while soft tonal transitions allow background figures to merge with their surroundings. The street is therefore suggested less through conventional perspective than through overlapping bodies, changing scale and alternating areas of light and shade.
Small organic motifs temper the geometry of the crowd. At the lower left, pale, flowing shapes resemble foliage, while a softer floral or leafy form appears near the right edge. A horizontal line across the lower portion may suggest a ledge or the division of a pathway. These peripheral details gently frame the human activity, setting curved natural forms against the repeated verticals and dark accents of the figures.
Context and significance
Der Blaue Reiter brought together artists who rejected strictly naturalistic representation in favour of more expressive relationships between colour, line and form. Macke shared that freedom while retaining a clarity and decorative order distinctly his own. In his street scenes, people are frequently treated as components within a larger visual pattern: clothing becomes a plane of colour, hats become repeated motifs, and the crowd becomes a structure through which the eye travels.
Auf der Promenade demonstrates how subtly Macke could apply those ideas. Its subject is recognisably modern, but no anecdote dominates; the interest lies in the spacing of bodies, the alternation of stillness and motion, and the way a public scene is compressed into an almost abstract design. The seated figure provides a quiet centre, while the surrounding silhouettes preserve the fleeting, anonymous character of life observed in passing.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Every restored art print begins with the original artist’s work—never an AI-generated replacement.
Our London studio works from carefully selected source material from museums, libraries, archives and private collections. We restore age-related damage, faded colour and imperfect reproduction while preserving the artist’s composition, brushwork, line, texture and period character.
We do not use generative AI to redraw, reinterpret or invent the artwork. Digital restoration is used only to recover and reproduce the original work as faithfully as possible.
Once restored, the master artwork is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.
Our giclée art prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks for a rich, museum-quality finish. Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
