Pierre-Joseph Redouté’s Description des plantes rares cultivées à Malmaison et à Navarre, Plate 26, dated 1813, presents the plant labelled Rhoexia Pendulifolia as a tall, finely articulated specimen. A slender stem rises through an abundance of heart-shaped leaves before reaching clusters of minute flowers at the apex. Rather than surrounding the plant with a setting, Redouté isolates it against a warm, pale ground, allowing the changing scale, colour and alignment of its foliage to become the composition’s principal drama.

The plate belongs to an early nineteenth-century project devoted to rare plants cultivated at Malmaison and Navarre. Malmaison, closely associated with Joséphine Bonaparte, became renowned for its gardens and collections at a time when European interest in botany, horticulture and newly introduced plants was especially intense. Redouté—widely known as the “painter of flowers”—was ideally suited to this culture of connoisseurship and study. His botanical work united the descriptive clarity required of a scientific record with an exceptional sensitivity to rhythm, proportion and colour.

A closer look

The main stem occupies the central vertical axis, but the arrangement is far from rigid. Leaves extend alternately to either side, creating an irregular sequence of diagonals and gently overlapping forms. Some turn fully towards the viewer, displaying their veined surfaces and softly pointed contours; others are seen obliquely, their narrower profiles suggesting the plant’s structure in space. The greens range from deep, cool tones to lighter yellow-green, with restrained gradations giving individual leaves a quiet sense of volume.

At the top, the broad foliage gives way to delicate flowering growth. Fine stems carry small blossoms and buds whose pale forms are made legible through precise outlines and minute internal detail. This change of scale—from substantial leaves to almost weightless flowers—draws the eye steadily upwards. The generous area of unmarked ground around the upper branches prevents these slight structures from becoming lost, while also preserving the specimen’s elegant silhouette.

Near the lower left, separate reproductive details supplement the principal study. A small flowering or fruiting structure and another carefully observed element are set apart from the central stem, enabling close examination without disturbing the larger plant portrait. Such details reveal the dual purpose of botanical illustration: to convey the overall habit of a species while also recording the smaller features useful for identification. Beneath them, the gracefully lettered name Rhoexia Pendulifolia anchors the composition, while the number “26” appears discreetly in the upper-right corner.

Context and significance

Redouté’s achievement lies partly in making classification visually compelling. The plant is presented with clarity, yet it never feels reduced to a diagram. Repeated leaf shapes establish a decorative rhythm; slight asymmetries keep that rhythm alive; and the contrast between dense foliage and open ground gives the specimen a commanding presence. Fine linework describes veins, petal structures and buds, while subtle colour shifts distinguish overlapping leaves without resorting to heavy shadow.

Plate 26 exemplifies a period in which botanical publications served scientific, horticultural and aesthetic interests at once. Its cultivated subject is documented systematically, but also treated as an individual form worthy of sustained attention. The result is characteristic of Redouté at his most assured: exact enough to inform, spacious enough to contemplate, and attentive to the plant’s smallest structures without losing sight of the graceful logic of its growth.
