August Macke’s Szene aus 1001 Nacht—Scene from One Thousand and One Nights—was created in 1913, at the height of his involvement with German Expressionism. Rather than illustrating a clearly defined episode from the celebrated cycle of tales, Macke constructs an evocative theatrical world: a figure advances through the foreground carrying a tray and vessel, while two companions gather closely behind. Fountain-like architecture, curling vegetation and cloud-shaped forms turn the scene into an animated web of figures, ornament and movement.

Macke was a leading member of Der Blaue Reiter, the Munich-based circle that helped reshape German art in the years before the First World War. His work absorbed the innovations of the European avant-garde while retaining a distinctive delight in rhythm, colour and everyday spectacle. The imaginative setting of the Arabian Nights offered fertile material for this approach. Long established within European visual and literary culture as a realm of marvels, disguises and elaborate storytelling, it allowed Macke to move beyond naturalistic description and organise the scene through stylised forms and decorative pattern.

A closer look

The principal figure occupies the centre of the composition, caught in a walking pose with the body turned slightly across the picture. A tray is balanced at chest height, carrying a rounded pot or vessel. The silhouette is articulated by strong dark contours, while denser passages of hatching model the clothing and give weight to the moving form. Even the intricately described hairstyle contributes to the figure’s sense of animation, its curves answering those of the surrounding foliage.

At the right, two figures stand with their arms around one another, creating a quieter, more intimate counterpoint to the purposeful movement in front of them. They are partly enclosed by stylised leaves and grasses, so that bodies and vegetation appear woven into the same decorative structure. Overlapping outlines and changes in line weight provide a suggestion of depth without creating a conventionally realistic space: foreground and background remain visually connected across the pale ground.

Towards the lower left, a fountain-like structure introduces a firm vertical accent, while a circular basin near the centre anchors the otherwise free-flowing arrangement. Above, loose cloud forms soften the upper edge and reinforce the dreamlike character of the setting. The restricted contrast of deep black, warm beige and small pale highlights gives unusual force to Macke’s line. Hatching shifts from tight, shadowed clusters to lighter, more open strokes, making surfaces seem to pulse between solidity and ornament.

Context and significance

Created in the inventive atmosphere of pre-war German art, Szene aus 1001 Nacht belongs to a moment when artists associated with Expressionism were abandoning straightforward imitation in favour of heightened visual experience. Macke’s particular contribution was often less anguished than that of many of his contemporaries. He favoured lucid structures, simplified silhouettes and compositions held together by recurring curves and rhythms. Here, narrative remains deliberately elusive: the carried vessel, embracing figures and garden setting suggest a story without fixing its meaning.

That balance between suggestion and structure gives the work its enduring fascination. From a distance, the dark forms read almost as a pattern spread across the light field; closer inspection reveals gestures, textures and small exchanges between the figures. Macke turns a literary fantasy into something immediate and visually mobile—a scene whose atmosphere is carried as much by contour and spacing as by its exotic subject.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater.
