vintage-bock-beer-poster-by-carl-burckardt-1900
Vintage Bock Beer Poster by Carl Burckardt, 1900

Carl Burckardt’s Heute Bockbier!, made around 1900, turns a simple announcement — “Bock beer today!” — into a piece of spirited visual theatre. Two gnome-like figures crowd around an oversized foaming mug, their bent bodies, vivid clothing and eager expressions giving the encounter the air of a marvellous discovery. Bold black lettering anchors the lower edge, while twisting hop vines rise along the sides and bind the drinking scene to the ingredients and imagery of brewing.

The poster belongs to a period when commercial art was becoming an increasingly prominent feature of German city streets and shop windows. Bright colour, emphatic outlines and memorable characters allowed an advertisement to communicate quickly in a busy public setting. Burckardt, active in Germany during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, uses precisely that economy: the message is brief, the beer monumental and the mood unmistakably convivial. Bock, a strong beer style with longstanding seasonal associations, is presented not as an everyday commodity but as an occasion worth announcing.

A closer look

The composition is built around the comically disproportionate beer mug in the central foreground. Both figures lean towards it, creating a pair of diagonals that concentrate attention on the pale foam at its rim. One wears a red upper garment with blue trousers; the other combines blue with purplish tones. Dark, decisive contours keep their compact silhouettes clear against the softly coloured ground, while small folds and decorative details in their clothing lend each character an individual, storybook presence.

Around them, green leaves and hop flowers curl upwards in a loose botanical frame. These organic lines soften the blocky forms of the lettering and generate movement through an otherwise shallow, poster-like space. The restrained background is particularly effective: rather than constructing a detailed setting, Burckardt leaves the central encounter isolated and immediately legible. A six-pointed star appears above the figures, adding a crisp geometric note amid the looping stems and irregular foliage, while a faint border contains the exuberant arrangement.

The words Heute Bockbier! occupy the bottom of the design in heavy black type. Their placement gives the poster a clear sequence: first the humorous figures and towering drink catch the eye, then the terse announcement explains the scene. The exclamation mark is integral to the tone, converting information into a public cry. Even the smallest details — the textured froth, leaves edging the figures’ hats and the concentrated expressions as they peer towards the mug — support the poster’s genial exaggeration.

Context and significance

At the turn of the twentieth century, posters offered artists a distinctly modern challenge: an effective design had to be understood at a glance, often from a distance, yet remain distinctive enough to lodge in the memory. Heute Bockbier! answers that challenge through flat areas of strong colour, forceful typography and a compact visual anecdote. Its playful fantasy does more than decorate the advertisement; it gives the product a cast of characters and a celebratory atmosphere.

Burckardt’s design preserves the directness of early beverage advertising while revealing how inventive such commercial images could be. Its combination of brewing motifs, folkloric humour and disciplined graphic hierarchy makes the poster both an engaging record of everyday drinking culture and a deft example of turn-of-the-century visual communication.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
