Heinrich C. Berann’s North Cascades is a luminous, sweeping panorama that captures the drama and intricacy of Washington’s most rugged mountain realm. Composed in 1989 and thoughtfully revised in 2017 by the National Park Service’s Harpers Ferry Center, this birds-eye view fuses art and geographic precision to reveal the knit of peaks, rivers, and valleys that define the region. Snow-capped massifs—Mount Baker, Mount Shuksan, and Glacier Peak—rise in sculpted relief beneath drifting bands of cloud, while the angled light animates every ridge and cirque. Ross Lake and the glacially tinted Diablo Lake glow like turquoise inlays, and the sinuous thread of Highway 20 cuts an elegant traverse, guiding the eye and the imagination through the heart of the North Cascades.
Berann’s composition embraces the full triad of protected landscapes: North Cascades National Park, Ross Lake National Recreation Area, and Lake Chelan National Recreation Area. It traces the coursing Nooksack River and the powerful Skagit system, while the Stehekin River pours into Lake Chelan at the secluded community of Stehekin. Landmarks abound—Sourdough Mountain, Cascade Pass, Diamond Peak, and Hannegan Pass—each precisely placed amid deep forests and serrated skylines. To the east, the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest frames the high country; to the west, Lake Whatcom and the fertile Skagit Valley anchor the lowlands. On the far horizon, Mount Rainier rises like a sentinel, a volcanic counterpoint that situates the North Cascades within the greater Cascade arc.
The map’s ecological narrative is as compelling as its aesthetics. Berann renders the North Cascades as one of the most glaciated mountain systems in the contiguous United States, a vital water tower feeding salmon-bearing rivers and temperate rainforests. Distinct microclimates emerge in his palette: wet, moss-laden valleys ascending to subalpine meadows and bare, wind-scoured summits. Conifer cloaks of Douglas-fir, hemlock, and cedar yield to alpine larch and krummholz near the skyline, while the artist’s vignettes of wildlife evoke mountain goats on high crags, marmots in talus, and birds wheeling on mountain thermals. The portrayal of ice, water, and forest underscores a living system where geology, weather, and biodiversity are inseparably braided.
Historically, this panorama embodies a landmark era in American conservation. The 1968 establishment of North Cascades National Park, paired with the Ross Lake and Lake Chelan National Recreation Areas, reaffirmed a national commitment to preserving vast, roadless wilderness while accommodating thoughtful recreation. Berann’s 1989 rendition became a potent interpretive tool, inviting the public to understand the region’s topography and its fragile interdependencies just as the North Cascades Highway matured into a symbolic, carefully controlled gateway. The 2017 digital revision by the Harpers Ferry Center deepened the map’s educational role, aligning details with contemporary knowledge while preserving the artist’s iconic vision—bridging hand-rendered mastery and modern stewardship.
For the collector, the allure lies in both artistry and insight. Berann’s chromatic range captures shifting mountain weather—glints of sun between cloud strata, shadow pooling in glacial basins—while refined labels guide exploration without cluttering the view. Rivers lead the eye upward to austere ridges; routes such as Cascade Pass and Hannegan Pass invite imagined traverses; Stehekin suggests a journey by water to the hidden head of Lake Chelan. As a testament to place and purpose, this work stands at the confluence of fine art and environmental history, a singular panorama that celebrates the North Cascades’ wild grandeur and the enduring American project of conservation.

This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, Father's Day, work leaving, anniversary or housewarming gift for someone from the areas covered by this map.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
