Seguir leyendoPierre-Joseph Redouté’s Choix des plus belles fleurs, plate 081, created for the 1827 publication, presents a flowering plant as a poised vertical arrangement of rose-pink and violet blooms, fresh green leaves and slender stems. Rather than filling the page, the specimen rises through a generous pale ground, its overlapping flowers concentrated towards the centre and upper reaches of the composition. Bright yellow centres punctuate the softer petals, while unopened buds introduce quieter moments among the fully expanded flower heads.
Redouté was among the most celebrated botanical illustrators of the early nineteenth century, earning the enduring epithet “the Raphael of flowers”. His studies helped define a period in which botanical imagery served several purposes at once: recording the structure of plants, satisfying a growing enthusiasm for their classification, and presenting them as objects of aesthetic fascination. Choix des plus belles fleurs exemplifies this meeting of art, science and decorative print culture. Precision remains essential, but it is accompanied by an evident concern for balance, colour and graceful arrangement.
A closer look
The principal cluster is built from flowers at different stages of opening. Some blossoms face forward, revealing small, luminous yellow centres; others turn to the side, allowing the curled profiles and layered construction of the petals to be seen. Their colour moves subtly from clear pink to cooler lilac and purple, with delicate gradations defining each fold. The strongest hues are reserved for the upper and central flowers, giving the composition a gentle upward pull.
Below, the foliage supplies weight and contrast. Broad green leaves spread around the base of the flowering stems, their serrated edges and branching veins recorded with close attention. Darker tones gather where one leaf overlaps another, while paler highlights suggest the slight ridges and undulations of their surfaces. Fine stems connect this lower mass to the blooms above; tiny hairs and emerging buds reward closer inspection without disturbing the clarity of the larger silhouette.
Redouté’s sense of spacing is as important as his descriptive detail. The plant is isolated without appearing static: stems lean away from the central axis, leaves project in different directions, and the blossoms form an irregular crown rather than a rigidly symmetrical bouquet. Open ground around these elements allows each contour to remain legible. The result has the authority of a botanical study and the rhythm of a carefully considered floral composition.
Context and significance
Botanical illustration occupied a distinctive place in early nineteenth-century visual culture. It communicated knowledge about plant form while also appealing to readers interested in horticulture, collecting and the ornamental possibilities of flowers. Redouté was particularly adept at reconciling these demands. In this plate, the veins, stems, buds and variations between individual blooms establish observational credibility, yet the specimen has also been edited into an elegant page: full enough to feel luxuriant, but never crowded.
What continues to distinguish the study is this balance between exactness and ease. No elaborate setting competes with the plant, and no decorative border contains it. Instead, small shifts of pink, violet and green carry the composition, while the pale surrounding space turns close botanical observation into something serene and remarkably refined.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
