Seguir leyendoPlate 98 from Pierre-Joseph Redouté’s Choix des plus belles fleurs, published in 1827, gathers a flowering spray, richly veined foliage and two ripening rose hips into an arrangement of studied asymmetry. White blooms with warm yellow centres occupy the heart of the composition, while pink-tinged buds rise towards the upper right. Against the pale cream ground, each stem, petal and serrated leaf remains distinct, yet the plant retains the supple rhythm of something observed in growth rather than pressed into a rigid diagram.
Redouté, the celebrated French botanical artist often described as the “Raphael of flowers”, helped establish a particularly influential balance between scientific description and painterly refinement. Choix des plus belles fleurs belonged to a culture in which horticulture, natural history and the cultivation of ornamental plants were closely entwined. Such plates were valued not only for their elegance but also as visual records: colour, leaf structure, the form of buds and the transition from flower to fruit all contributed to the identification and appreciation of a plant.
A closer look
The central blossoms are rendered in softly modulated whites rather than a single flat tone. Their petals pass from creamy highlights into the palest blush pink, with delicate shadowing where one overlaps another. At the centre of the foremost flower, fine filaments radiate around a small yellow core, providing a point of concentrated detail amid the broader, translucent petals. Nearby blooms turn at slightly different angles, revealing how the flower changes when seen from the front, side and in partial profile.
The foliage creates the composition’s darker framework. Leaves extend towards the upper left in varied greens, from light yellow-green to deeper, cooler tones, their veins and finely toothed edges carefully articulated. Subtle hairs along their surfaces and stems introduce another level of observation. These leaves do more than identify botanical structure: their alternating directions counterbalance the rising branch of pink buds and lead the eye back towards the open flowers.
At the lower right, two orange-brown rose hips provide a compact, earthy contrast to the pale corollas above. Their presence makes the plate a study of successive stages rather than a single moment of flowering—closed buds, open blooms and mature fruit coexist on the page. The resulting depth is slight but persuasive, created through overlapping stems and tonal shifts rather than a depicted setting. Along the lower edge, the fine inscription “Rosaire de Candolle variete.” anchors the otherwise spacious field with an elegant handwritten line.
Context and significance
Redouté’s achievement lies in his refusal to separate botanical usefulness from visual grace. The ample empty ground allows every contour to be read clearly, while the curved stems and unequal distribution of leaves prevent the specimen from becoming static. This combination suited the ambitions of lavish early nineteenth-century flower books, which brought rare and ornamental plants to readers through images capable of communicating both distinguishing features and horticultural allure.
Plate 98 rewards particularly close attention because its restraint conceals a remarkable density of information. The minute leaf veins, the strengthening pink of the unopened buds, the soft lucency of the petals and the drier tones of the fruit together describe a plant as a changing organism. Redouté transforms that record into a poised composition without sacrificing its specificity—a characteristic union of exactitude and elegance that continues to define his botanical art.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
