A horse-drawn delivery cart occupies the centre of the street, surrounded by drinkers, passers-by and children, while tiled roofs and a slender church steeple rise behind them. Earthy browns, soft greens and pastel yellows give the scene an easy warmth; touches of red and blue animate the figures before the product name appears in emphatic lettering across the lower margin.
Lynen was a Belgian artist with a talent for clear, popular imagery and subjects drawn from everyday experience. Here, commercial promotion is woven into a communal scene rather than isolated as a simple display of bottle and label. The poster belongs to an early twentieth-century visual culture in which advertising and illustrated ephemera were becoming increasingly conspicuous features of urban and public life. Its combination of anecdotal detail, legible branding and immediate narrative reflects the need for such designs to attract attention quickly while rewarding a longer look.
A closer look
The composition is organised around the cart in the central foreground. Its large wheels, harness and dark framework create a strong graphic structure, while two uniformed men seated above the vehicle give the delivery an almost ceremonial presence. Partial branding is visible on the side of the cart, integrating the advertised name into the action of the scene. From this focal point, the gently winding road draws the eye deeper into the village, towards small groups of figures gathered near the church.
On the left, several men sit beneath a tree at outdoor tables, leaning into conversation. Their darker clothing and the shaded foliage form a weighty counterbalance to the brighter right-hand side, where a woman in a pale dress stands among a group of children. The children’s varied poses introduce a note of informal movement: they cluster, turn and play rather than holding the static attitudes of conventional advertising figures. These parallel groups make the street feel socially connected, with the beverage presented as part of a recognisable rhythm of work and leisure.
Architecture provides both setting and scale. Red-tiled roofs angle in from the right edge, while trees soften the buildings on the opposite side. Above them, the church tower rises through an opening in the composition, its vertical form emphasised by the poster’s portrait format. The sky is pale and softly clouded, and the diffused light allows small details—folds of clothing, harness straps, wheel spokes and suggestions of stonework—to remain visible without disturbing the broad colour masses. At the bottom, the bold words “ELIXIR De Kempenaar” establish a firm visual base, transforming the scene above into a memorable commercial identity.
Context and significance
Posters of this period had to work at more than one distance. Large lettering communicated the name immediately, while lively illustration encouraged the eye to linger. Lynen’s design handles that dual purpose with particular assurance: the typography is unmistakably promotional, but the village episode has the density and incident of an illustrated story. The product is associated not with luxury or metropolitan spectacle, but with sociability, local distribution and a shared public world.
Created in the years immediately before the First World War, Elixir De Kempenaar preserves the visual language of an expanding consumer culture alongside an affectionate record of period dress, transport and street life. Its appeal lies in that balance between commerce and observation: what first reads as a spirited beverage poster gradually reveals itself as a carefully staged panorama of community.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (90x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
