Seguir leyendoFrank C. King’s John Roessle’s Premium Lager Beer, created in 1877, centres its sales message on a characterful gentleman caught in a moment of evident contentment. With one hand resting beneath his chin and the other holding a foaming glass of lager, he occupies the poster like the genial host of a tavern. Warm browns, amber-orange tones and a vivid red waistcoat establish an atmosphere of abundance, while bold ornamental lettering turns the brewer’s name into part of the spectacle.
The poster belongs to a period when breweries increasingly used richly worked commercial imagery to distinguish their products in a crowded marketplace. Late nineteenth-century advertising often borrowed the visual authority of portraiture, decorative emblems and elaborate typography, surrounding an everyday commodity with suggestions of refinement and established reputation. King’s design exemplifies this blend of salesmanship and ornament: the lager is presented not as an isolated product, but as the focus of a carefully staged encounter between character, appetite and brand identity.
A closer look
The gentleman’s head and shoulders dominate the centre of the vertical composition. A pale, tightly curled wig frames his face, drawing attention to his moustache, gently narrowed eyes and contemplative pose. His white shirt catches the strongest highlights, standing out against the deeper tones of his clothing and the subdued wooden background. The brilliant red of his waistcoat provides the principal colour accent, echoed by smaller passages of red elsewhere in the design.
Below, the beer mug is positioned prominently enough to function almost as a second portrait. Its transparent body contains pale lager capped by a thick, carefully described head of froth. Cool blue decoration and glinting reflections across the glass provide a striking counterpoint to the surrounding russets, creams and golden browns. The contrast makes the drink appear especially crisp within an otherwise warmly toned scene. A partly visible wooden box at the lower right helps anchor the figure in a commercial setting without distracting from the glass itself.
Typography controls the movement of the eye above and below the central figure. The brewer’s name arches across the upper section in emphatic red lettering, while “PREMIUM LAGER BEER” forms a broad decorative base. A horizontal red band strengthens the lower register, giving the composition a firm graphic finish. Around these elements, scroll-like patterns, gold-coloured accents and a pale beige border create the impression of a framed trade emblem. Even the small seal-like device near the bottom contributes to the language of quality and distinction.
Context and significance
By 1877, advances in mass-produced colour printing had made increasingly vivid and elaborate advertising possible. Brewers were particularly well suited to this new visual culture: their products could be associated with convivial figures, recognisable lettering and memorable colour schemes long before modern branding became standardised. Such posters needed to attract attention at a distance while rewarding closer inspection, a dual purpose visible here in the combination of large type and finely rendered facial, textile and glass details.
King’s poster is therefore more than a straightforward trade notice. Its persuasive force lies in the way it gives personality to the beer: the poised figure, decorative setting and prominently raised mug transform a brand name into a miniature social scene. The result retains the confident visual energy of nineteenth-century beverage advertising, when commerce and ornamental graphic art were becoming ever more closely entwined.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
