Seguir leyendoPierre-Joseph Redouté’s Les liliacées, Plate 59, dated 1805, presents Narcissus minor—labelled in French as Narcisse petit—with an economy that heightens every botanical detail. Two yellow flowers open near the centre of the composition, their flared trumpets and gently ruffled edges set among slender green leaves. Rather than showing the plant in a garden, Redouté isolates the complete specimen against a pale ground, tracing its form from the blossoms down to the brown bulb and the delicate roots spreading beneath it.
The plate belongs to Redouté’s celebrated early nineteenth-century series Les liliacées, devoted to lilies and related flowering plants. Produced for aristocratic and scientific audiences, the series emerged at a time when botanical classification, close observation and luxury book production were closely connected. Redouté was admired for resolving these different demands with unusual elegance: his plants are sufficiently precise to communicate their structure, yet their placement on the page gives them the poise of individual portraits.
A closer look
The flowers form the brightest concentration of colour. Their clear golden yellow is not uniform: paler passages towards the petal tips and soft tonal shifts around the trumpets suggest the thinness and slight translucency of living tissue. Fine lines articulate the folds and margins without hardening them, while the narrow stems supporting the blooms remain distinctly visible within the denser cluster of leaves.
Those leaves create much of the plate’s rhythm. Rising in long, tapered arcs, they overlap and separate as they move upwards, producing a restrained interplay of dark and light green. One curves away from the central axis while others stand more upright, preventing the specimen from appearing rigidly symmetrical. The ample unmarked space around them is equally important: it allows each contour to remain legible and gives the modest plant a surprising visual presence.
At the lower centre, the bulb introduces warmer brown tones and a more substantial sense of volume. Subtle highlights and shadows describe its rounded layers, before the form breaks into a network of fine roots. This below-ground anatomy is not treated as an incidental addition. By including blossom, foliage, bulb and root together, Redouté makes the plant’s whole structure available for study while maintaining a lucid, balanced composition. The inscriptions at the foot of the plate—Narcissus minor on the left and Narcisse petit on the right—quietly anchor the specimen within both scientific and vernacular systems of naming.
Context and significance
Redouté’s botanical studies occupy a distinctive place between natural history and floral art. His disciplined observation served the classificatory interests of his period, but he avoided the dryness of a merely diagrammatic record. Here, the slight variations in the leaves, the turn of each flower and the careful modulation of yellow preserve the irregularity of an individual living specimen.
Plate 59 is especially revealing in its treatment of scale and isolation. A relatively small narcissus receives the same attentive scrutiny that might be given to a grander or more elaborate flower. Set apart from habitat and surrounding vegetation, it becomes simultaneously an object of scientific examination and a finely organised study of line, colour and growth.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (90x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
