Seguir leyendoPublished in 1993 by the United States Geological Survey, “Chiricahua National Monument” presents one of southeastern Arizona’s most dramatic landscapes with the precision and authority of the National Park Service Series. And as of October 2026, this map now shows the United States' most recently minted national park: Chiricahua National Park.
At a detailed 1:24,000 scale, the map captures the national park and its surrounding terrain in Cochise County, where volcanic geology, steep canyons, and forested uplands meet the arid margins of the desert Southwest. Its vibrant color palette and finely drawn contour lines give immediate visual depth to the region’s elevations, ridges, drainages, and basin-like valleys. More than a guide to place, it is a carefully measured portrait of a protected landscape as understood in the early 1990s, reflecting contemporary conservation priorities and land-use boundaries.
The USGS brought to this map more than a century of national surveying expertise. Founded to classify public lands and examine the country’s geological structure, the agency became the principal cartographic authority for the United States, producing maps indispensable to scientists, land managers, engineers, and explorers. In the National Park Service Series, that technical rigor is applied to landscapes of exceptional natural and cultural value. Here, the USGS renders Chiricahua not as an abstract park outline, but as a living terrain of slopes, washes, escarpments, and wooded basins. Every contour speaks to the agency’s central purpose: to make the American landscape legible, measurable, and intelligible without diminishing its sense of grandeur.
Chiricahua National Monument is famous for its “sky island” setting and its extraordinary rock formations, the remnants of ancient volcanic activity shaped by erosion into pinnacles, columns, balanced rocks, and narrow corridors. Features such as Echo Canyon, Bonito Canyon, Cueva Canyon, and the evocatively named City of Rocks suggest a terrain both labyrinthine and monumental. The map’s topographic treatment allows the eye to trace how water and time carved these forms from welded volcanic tuff, creating a sculptural landscape of ravines and high points. Pinnacle Peak and The Needles stand out not merely as named locations, but as expressions of the region’s geological drama, where elevation and erosion combine to produce a landscape unlike any other in Arizona.
Beyond the monument’s core, the map places Chiricahua within a broader ecological and geographical context. Coronado National Forest frames much of the surrounding high country, linking the monument to the greater Chiricahua Mountains and their varied habitats. Dry Canyon, Turkey Creek, Ash Canyon, Cedar Canyon, and Cavern Canyon reveal the complexity of drainage systems threading through the terrain. Nearby landmarks such as Faraway Ranch add a human dimension to the map, recalling the ranching, settlement, and preservation history that shaped public appreciation of the area. Rustler Park and Chiricahua Peak point toward the higher mountain environment beyond the monument, where cooler forests and rugged ridgelines rise above the desert floor.
As a cartographic object, this map balances scientific clarity with visual richness. The 1:24,000 scale offers an intimate reading of the land, emphasizing elevation changes, ridges, valleys, and landforms with a level of detail prized by hikers, historians, conservationists, and collectors alike. Its contours do not merely mark height; they choreograph movement through the landscape, showing how one canyon opens into another, how peaks command surrounding basins, and how protected lands relate to neighboring national forest terrain. Published at a moment when ecological stewardship and public-land interpretation were increasingly prominent, “Chiricahua National Monument” stands as both a functional topographic record and a refined historical snapshot of a remarkable Arizona landscape.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Published in 1993 by the United States Geological Survey, “Chiricahua National Monument” presents one of southeastern Arizona’s most dramatic landscapes with the precision and authority of the National Park Service Series. And as of October 2026, this map now shows the United States' most recently minted national park: Chiricahua National Park.
