Seguir leyendoTitled “Westmore,” this 1986 provisional map produced by the U.S. Geological Survey captures a striking corner of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom with the precision and restraint that define modern American topographic mapping. Based on 1986 survey data, it presents the landscape at the detailed 1:24,000 scale, allowing roads, trails, watercourses, settlements, forest boundaries, and elevation changes to be read with exceptional clarity. At its heart lies Lake Willoughby, one of Vermont’s most dramatic natural features, framed by steep terrain and long admired for its glacial beauty. The map records not simply a place, but a moment in the region’s evolving geography, preserving the rural pattern of Westmore and its surrounding highlands in the mid-1980s.
The U.S. Geological Survey brought to this map more than a century of institutional cartographic expertise. Founded in 1879, the USGS became the nation’s principal authority for mapping terrain, measuring natural resources, and providing scientific information essential to land management, engineering, conservation, and public use. Its topographic quadrangles are celebrated for their disciplined visual language: brown contour lines for relief, blue for water, green for woodland, and precise black and red markings for human infrastructure. In “Westmore,” that system transforms a complex Vermont landscape into a legible, elegant composition. Every contour, road, and stream reflects the USGS commitment to accuracy, making the map both a scientific document and a finely ordered portrait of place.
Lake Willoughby dominates the composition, its long, narrow form revealing the glacial forces that shaped this part of Vermont. Often compared to a fjord because of its steep enclosing slopes, the lake is one of the state’s most celebrated scenic destinations, associated with swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, and autumn travel through the Northeast Kingdom. Nearby Westmore appears as a modest populated place, its presence delicately set within a larger natural setting of water, woods, and rising ground. The surrounding contours emphasize the lake’s dramatic topography, making clear why this area has long drawn visitors seeking both recreation and solitude. The map’s measured symbols quietly convey the grandeur of the terrain.
Beyond Lake Willoughby, the map extends into a varied landscape of ponds, rivers, forests, and upland settlements. Brownington appears to the west, connecting the sheet to a broader historical and rural context in Orleans County. Willoughby State Forest is a particularly important feature, marking protected land around one of Vermont’s most memorable natural basins. The Clyde River, Dodge Pond, and Little Willoughby Lake add further hydrological detail, showing how water structures both the ecology and the human geography of the region. Roads and trails, differentiated by solid and dashed lines, trace routes through wooded terrain and around lakeshores, suggesting patterns of movement shaped by slope, forest, and settlement.
As a provisional map, “Westmore” has a special documentary quality, reflecting the practical urgency of recording accurate geographic information while survey data remained current. It offers a mid-1980s view of a landscape where recreation, conservation, rural life, and natural beauty intersected. Comparing it with contemporary mapping can reveal changes in land use, road development, forest management, and shoreline occupation around Lake Willoughby and Westmore. Yet its appeal is not merely analytical. The dense contouring, clean typography, and careful color hierarchy create a quiet visual sophistication. For collectors of Vermont, New England, or USGS cartography, this map is a richly detailed window into one of the state’s most scenic and topographically expressive regions.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Titled “Westmore,” this 1986 provisional map produced by the U.S.
