Seguir leyendoPublished in 1980 under the succinct title “Pella,” this US Geological Survey 1:24,000 topographic map captures the Iowa town and its surrounding landscape with the precision and restrained elegance characteristic of late twentieth-century federal cartography. The map presents Pella not merely as a point on the prairie, but as a lived-in settlement embedded within roads, fields, wooded tracts, streams, ponds, and gently varying elevations. Its contour lines give form to the subtle relief of south-central Iowa, while green shading distinguishes wooded areas and open spaces from the surrounding agricultural terrain. As a snapshot of Pella in 1980, the map records an important moment in the town’s modern development, preserving the relationship between its urban grid, rural margins, transportation routes, and natural features.
The US Geological Survey brought more than a century of institutional expertise to maps such as this, combining field survey, aerial interpretation, and standardized symbology into one of the most trusted cartographic languages in the world. At 1:24,000 scale, the “Pella” quadrangle offers a particularly intimate view: individual roads, watercourses, contours, and land-cover distinctions are rendered clearly enough to support planning, engineering, recreation, and environmental study. The classic USGS topographic style is at once scientific and beautiful, balancing dense information with visual clarity. Fine brown contour lines trace elevation, blue symbols articulate lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams, and green areas signal vegetation and parkland. The result is a disciplined portrait of place, designed for practical use yet rich with historical resonance.
Pella itself gives the map unusual cultural depth. Founded by Dutch immigrants in the nineteenth century, the town became one of Iowa’s most distinctive communities, preserving a strong sense of heritage through architecture, civic traditions, and its celebrated Tulip Time Festival. On this map, that cultural identity is anchored in geography: the town’s streets, surrounding roads, nearby open lands, and neighboring features show how Pella sat within a broader rural landscape at the close of the 1970s. The map invites comparison between the orderly human pattern of the town and the softer natural contours around it. It is a document of a community known for continuity and tradition, yet also one undergoing the incremental changes of modern land use and regional growth.
Beyond the town, the map’s surrounding countryside is animated by Lake Prairie, smaller lakes and ponds, streams, wooded margins, and a network of local roads and highways. These details reveal the topographical diversity of an area that might otherwise be imagined as uniformly flat farmland. Subtle slopes, drainage lines, and patches of vegetation show how water and elevation shaped settlement, agriculture, and movement through the region. The wooded green spaces adjacent to Pella stand out against the mapped road grid and open land, suggesting recreational, ecological, and scenic value. The hydrographic features, rendered in the familiar blue of USGS maps, provide a quiet but essential structure to the scene, marking the natural systems that underlie the town’s built environment.
As a historical document, the 1980 “Pella” map offers a compelling record of land use at a specific moment in Iowa’s late twentieth-century history. It preserves the extent of urban development, the pattern of roads and highways, the distribution of parks and green space, and the relationship between cultivated land and waterways before later decades of expansion and change. For collectors, historians, and anyone with a connection to Pella, its value lies in this layered perspective: it is simultaneously a technical survey, a cultural artifact, and a portrait of place. The map’s careful topography captures both the visible landscape and the quieter forces—settlement, heritage, water, elevation, and planning—that shaped the community.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
