Seguir leyendoPublished with a 1991 imprint from 1984 cartographic data, “Winston-Salem, North Carolina” presents the Twin City and its surrounding Piedmont landscape through the disciplined visual language of the United States Geological Survey. At a 1:100,000 scale, the map balances regional breadth with topographic specificity, setting Winston-Salem within a wider network of towns, roads, rivers, and rural districts. Its careful palette distinguishes urbanized areas, wooded tracts, waterways, transportation corridors, and elevation changes, creating a richly informative portrait of north-central North Carolina. More than a navigational document, it captures a metropolitan area in transition: a historic tobacco and textile center expanding into a more diversified late twentieth-century economy.
Winston-Salem occupies the heart of the map, its urban form shaped by the historic pairing of Winston and Salem—one associated with industrial growth, the other with the Moravian settlement whose legacy still defines the city’s cultural identity. The map evokes the region’s layered past, from colonial-era religious communities to the rise of tobacco manufacturing and banking institutions that made Winston-Salem a major Southern city. Surrounding neighborhoods and suburbs, including Old Town, Rural Hall, Clemmons, and Kernersville, reveal the outward spread of development by the 1980s. Roads, rail lines, and built-up zones trace the practical geography of commuting, commerce, and suburban expansion across Forsyth County and beyond.
The transportation pattern is one of the map’s most compelling features, with Interstate 40 and US Route 52 serving as dominant structural elements in the landscape. These corridors tie Winston-Salem to Greensboro and High Point to the east, Statesville to the west, and the broader interstate system of the American South. Their presence reflects the postwar reshaping of North Carolina’s Piedmont, where manufacturing towns, university centers, and growing suburbs became increasingly interconnected. Smaller roads web outward into rural communities, farm districts, and wooded areas, emphasizing the contrast between metropolitan density and the open countryside that still bordered the city in the late twentieth century.
Natural features provide a quieter counterpoint to the region’s urban and industrial history. Salem Lake appears as a defining landmark east of Winston-Salem, part recreational setting, part water resource, and part geographic anchor within the mapped terrain. The Yadkin River marks a powerful regional presence, historically important for settlement, agriculture, transportation, and later hydroelectric development in the Piedmont. Numerous smaller creeks and tributaries thread through the map, their courses shaped by the rolling topography of the Carolina uplands. Elevation contours and drainage patterns reveal a landscape of ridges, valleys, woodlands, and cultivated ground—subtle terrain that influenced roads, settlement, and land use over generations.
As a USGS production, the map embodies the agency’s reputation for precision, clarity, and scientific authority. Its symbols, colors, and organized hierarchy of information make the landscape legible without sacrificing complexity, allowing the viewer to read both natural form and human imprint. Urban centers, parks, woodlands, watercourses, county lands, and highways are integrated into a single coherent geographic record. For Winston-Salem, the 1984 survey moment is especially evocative: it documents a city after the heyday of tobacco dominance but before many later waves of redevelopment, demographic change, and economic reinvention. The result is a finely observed portrait of place, where history, infrastructure, and terrain meet.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
