Seguir leyendoJ. L. Goffart’s Select Quinquina, created in 1903, turns a beverage advertisement into a crowded rural vignette. Beneath the large red lettering, a young woman in traditional dress presents a bottle at a small table while an older, bearded man raises a clear glass. Warm yellows, leafy greens and earthen browns bind the figures to their surroundings, with domestic animals, tall flowers and a distant landscape extending the scene well beyond the immediate act of serving a drink.
The design belongs to a period when European commercial art increasingly combined practical advertising with the decorative ambitions associated with the turn of the century. Goffart, a Belgian artist active at this time, uses emphatic typography and clearly staged figures to make the brand instantly legible, while the abundance of incidental detail gives it the charm of an illustrated story. Quinquina takes its name from cinchona bark, historically used in tonic and medicinal beverages. Advertisers consequently presented such drinks through a suggestive mixture of healthfulness, refinement and exotic association.
A closer look
The composition is organised around the table and the prominently placed bottle. To the left, the woman’s costume creates the brightest passage: a golden-yellow skirt is set against a black bodice and voluminous white sleeves, with a flower pinned at her chest. Her open expression and forward-leaning posture direct attention towards the exchange. Opposite her, the older man wears a muted green suit and white head covering. His raised glass forms a small but crucial accent, catching the light between the darker tones of his beard, sleeve and surrounding foliage.
Goffart constructs depth through overlapping forms rather than leaving the central figures isolated against a plain advertising ground. Trees and a building recede into a softly handled landscape, while the foreground is densely furnished with leaves and flowers. Tall yellow blooms on the right echo the woman’s dress and carry its warmth across the composition. A pale chicken pecks at the lower left; on the opposite side, a seated cat brings a note of stillness beside the table. At the upper left, a child peering from behind a fence adds another small thread of narrative curiosity.
The lettering supplies the design’s strongest graphic contrast. “SELECT QUINQUINA” stretches across the top in bold, decorative red capitals, immediately separating the brand message from the predominantly green-and-yellow scene below. Yet the text does not feel detached from the illustration: its warmth is repeated in the flowers and clothing, while the vertical format and enclosing border hold the many details together. Fine touches—the woman’s pinned flower, the man’s lined face, the bottle label and the shadows around the tabletop—reward attention after the principal advertising message has been absorbed.
Context and significance
At the beginning of the twentieth century, posters and labels had to distinguish packaged goods in an increasingly sophisticated visual marketplace. Chromolithographic colour printing was widely used in commercial design, encouraging artists to work with strong tonal divisions, decorative outlines and memorable blocks of colour. Select Quinquina reflects that environment: it is legible from a distance, but sufficiently detailed to sustain closer looking.
Its visual language also reveals how commerce borrowed from contemporary decorative culture. The emphatic contour, ornamental flowers, stylised lettering and carefully balanced surface show the influence of Art Nouveau sensibilities without sacrificing the directness required of an advertisement. The result is both promotional and theatrical—a compact scene in which costume, gesture, landscape and typography all converge upon the bottle at its centre.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (60x90cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
