Seguir leyendoThe Ships (Holland) by Wassily Kandinsky is a lyrical glimpse into the artist’s early fascination with mood, color, and atmosphere. Long before his groundbreaking abstractions, Kandinsky (1866–1944) explored how simplified shapes and bold hues could convey the pulse of everyday life. Here, a Dutch maritime scene becomes a stage for rhythmic silhouettes and glowing color contrasts—boats and water distilled into curving forms that feel both observed and interpreted, capturing the spirit of a harbor rather than a literal account of it.
This fine art edition is meticulously produced by The Unique Maps Co. Choose from museum-quality, acid-free archival paper or richly textured artist’s cotton canvas, printed with fade-resistant pigment inks. Available in a range of sizes to suit intimate corners or statement walls, each print can be ordered with or without a border, and arrives unframed or expertly framed in your choice of black, white, or natural wood. Personalization options include custom titling, a commemorative caption, or a gift message on the reverse. If you have a specific frame size or wall arrangement in mind, we can tailor dimensions to fit perfectly.
Kandinsky is celebrated as a pioneer of abstract art, yet his early work often balanced representation with expressive simplification. In this period he gravitated toward subjects that allowed him to test how color harmonies and graphic structure could evoke feeling—an interest that would later blossom in his fully nonobjective compositions. For collectors, this piece offers a rare window into that formative journey.
The subject—ships set against a Dutch waterfront—speaks to the late 19th-century shift away from academic realism toward more personal visions of place. Rather than meticulously rendered rigging and architectural detail, the scene suggests the life of a harbor: the gentle tilt of hulls, the cadence of masts, and the shimmer of light over water. This approach aligns with a wider artistic movement that prized emotional truth and the “music” of a scene over documentary precision.
Color and design carry the narrative. A dominant orange cast infuses the sky and reflections with warmth, set against assertive blues that anchor the water and boat shadows; earthy browns steady the composition in the timbers and shoreline. Simplified, curvilinear boat forms are sketched with confident outlines reminiscent of folk art, while varied brushwork—from smooth passages to bold, decisive strokes—creates a rhythmic surface that suggests motion. The interplay of grayish undertones with flashes of deep blue, yellow, and red enlivens the picture, making it a striking addition to modern, coastal, or eclectic interiors.
Whether you’re commemorating a trip to the Netherlands, celebrating a new home, or seeking a thoughtful gift for Christmas, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, or a milestone birthday, The Ships (Holland) makes a timeless, conversation-starting choice—one that bridges maritime nostalgia with the visionary eye of a master in the making.
If you're not sure what size to order, or you're looking for a custom order of some kind – a different size, a different colour, a special frame – then please contact me. I usually respond within a few minutes.
You can see an example of my fine art personalisation service in the fifth image. Zoom in and take a look. My personalised artwork is always very well received. Take a look at more examples of personalisation.
You can also choose to age your art print to make it look older. This is popular amongst my customers who want their artwork to look like an older, antique print. You can see an example of ageing in the sixth product image, or go ahead and check out lots of examples of other aged artwork.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
I can print and frame this beautiful piece of art at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). If you are looking for a size or framing option that isn't available online, please get in touch.
This artwork is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. My standard frames come in six colours (black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white), and custom framing is available for an additional charge. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
