Pianta della citta di Napoli, issued in 1868 by the Milanese cartographer Francesco Vallardi, captures the city at a pivotal moment—newly national yet indelibly Neapolitan. Vallardi’s reputation for precise urban mapping shows in the densely lettered street network, the careful delineation of churches and civic monuments, and the eloquent rendering of the shoreline curving along the Bay of Naples. The plan privileges the living city: quarters spill into one another, lanes narrow into vici, and grand thoroughfares push outward toward new connections. An extensive index anchors the composition, transforming the sheet into a navigable catalogue of parishes, theaters, palaces, and piazze, and revealing Naples as both a sacred landscape and a bustling, modernizing port.

The map excels at showing how Naples’ ancient core still structures daily life. The old Greco-Roman decumani run like spines across the center, with Via dei Tribunali—Decumano Maggiore—clearly marked and bound by a thicket of vici: Vico di Porta S. Gennaro, Vico S. Pietro a Majella, and Vico della Pietà among them. To the west, the Quartieri Spagnoli emerges in tight relief, its grid of climbs and cut-throughs—Vico Trinità degli Spagnoli, Vico Lungo del Gelso, Vico di Montecalvario—pressing against the elegant north–south artery of Via Toledo. The presence of both Via Toledo and Via Roma signals an era of shifting toponyms, while side streets like Vico S. Anna di Palazzo and the booksellers’ Largo dei Librai preserve a neighborhood-scale intimacy.

Along the waterfront, Vallardi stages Naples as a theater facing the sea. The coastal promenade and roads, including Via Caracciolo and the approaches of Via Comunale and Santa Lucia, frame the Villa Comunale gardens and guide the eye toward the port basins and the medieval mass of Castel Nuovo. Out on the promontory, Castel dell’Ovo anchors the maritime skyline, while the map’s graded slopes and staircase-streets—such as Salita Tredici—indicate the dramatic rise toward Sant’Elmo and the Certosa di San Martino. Eastward, the new linearity of Corso Garibaldi and the route “via e porta di Napoli” announce the city’s engagement with rail and regional trade, balancing picturesque shorelines with purposeful circulation.

Religious and cultural Naples is everywhere inscribed. The Duomo and the precincts around Porta San Gennaro punctuate the Decumano with processional gravity; great mendicant houses—Santa Chiara and San Domenico Maggiore—anchor monastic enclaves within the medieval weave. The conservatory at San Pietro a Majella, hinted at in nearby street names, testifies to the city’s musical preeminence, while the district of the Belle Arti signals the academic world taking root in the north of the old center. Toward the royal precinct, Via San Carlo and Via Santa Brigida converge upon Teatro di San Carlo, the Palazzo Reale, and Piazza del Plebiscito—monuments Vallardi numbers and keys with care, turning devotion, learning, and spectacle into a legible urban circuit.

Vallardi’s craft makes this an especially notable city map: a harmonization of natural amphitheater and human labyrinth. My standard frame is a gallery style black ash hardwood frame. It is simple and quite modern looking. My standard frame is around 20mm (0.8in) wide.

I use super-clear acrylic (perspex/acrylite) for the frame glass. It's lighter and safer than glass - and it looks better, as the reflectivity is lower.

Six standard frame colours are available for free (black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white and antique gold). Custom framing and mounting/matting is available if you're looking for something else.

Most maps, art and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte (not shiny) cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced box wood frame, and then 'float' the piece within a wood frame. The end result is quite beautiful, and there's no glazing to get in the way.

All frames are provided "ready to hang", with either a string or brackets on the back. Very large frames will have heavy duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

I source original, rare maps from libraries, auction houses and private collections around the world, restore them at my London workshop, and then use specialist giclée inks and printers to create beautiful maps that look even better than the original.

My maps are printed on acid-free archival matte (not glossy) paper that feels very high quality and almost like card. In technical terms the paper weight/thickness is 10mil/200gsm. It's perfect for framing.

I print with Epson ultrachrome giclée UV fade resistant pigment inks - some of the best inks you can find.

Well, now you can, by selecting Aged before you add a map to your basket.

All the product photos you see on this page show the map in its Original form. This is what the map looks like today.

If you select Aged, I will age your map by hand, using a special and unique process developed through years of studying old maps, talking to researchers to understand the chemistry of aging paper, and of course... lots of practice!

If you're unsure, stick to the Original colour of the map. If you want something a bit darker and older looking, go for Aged.
